American cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Archbishop of Detroit from 1958-1980, and was created a cardinal in 1969. Bishop of Pittsburgh from 1950-1958. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Dearden earned the nickname "Iron John" for his stern manner of administration. Father Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of Notre Dame observed No other hierarchy in the world has a better or more forthright and courageous leader than John Cardinal Dearden.
